When we went to San Diego back in June, we stayed on Shelter Island. It was a great location from which to explore the area – easy to get anywhere, and a lovely park to enjoy in the evenings.

While waiting to take the shot above, I was taking some bracketed sets of long exposures nearby. I had just hit “go,” when this fellow photographer wandered into my shot to photograph the Tunaman’s Memorial. Two lucky things: (1) I was on one of the first shots, only two seconds (the longest of the set was 30); and (2) she paused just long enough for that two seconds.

I cannot believe I forgot to post this! San Diego has what is purported to be one of the best fireworks shows in the country – 18 minutes of identical, synchronized fireworks launched from five barges up and down San Diego’s harbor and the coast. Only this time, it lasted all of about 12 seconds!

It was of course disappointing not to get the long show, but watching all of them go up at once (supposedly due to a computer bug) was exciting, and at least I got a fun shot. (Here’s video.) And from whence my photo came, a bit earlier in the evening.

While we had some awesome weather this summer, we really didn’t get to get out and do as much as we liked, due to a cascade of family crises. We only got up to Badger Mountain once, for the annual Memorial Day weekend trip. Here’s one more shot from that trip.

Hoping to at least get out and snap some good fall pics – it’s one of my favorite times of year. Not the least of which because of this!

I’ve been getting used to my new Nikon D800 – a very nice camera, but it presents new challenges for a rank amateur like me: With such incredible resolution (36 megapixels!), sharp focus down to the pixel level requires a whole new level of attention. I’m not there yet.

I tried the D800 out with my Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 telephoto this evening. (The Sigma is not a bad lens for the money.) As the light was fading, I managed to get a few shots of the robins foraging around the garden.
